RIP but thanks for the good memories, La Pesca. Suggest instead Marisqueria Yolanda Morelos Esq. con Cuauhtemoc 40896 Zihuatanejo, Guerrero Phone 01 755 121 3306 A few blocks away is a very good substitute, perhaps even better than the now defunct La Pesca; the name is Marisqueria Yolanda . Simply delicious seafood and at a very reasonable price.
Just as I was about to pen Zihuatanejo as having the worst seafood of any port city I have ever visited (and I have been all around the Mexican coastal towns , my hotel manager after phoning a friend who was a seafood aficionado passed along this valuable info. What an oasis this place turned out to be in taste, freshness and price! Hidden away on the extreme edge of town, on the street directly behind the Pancake House , this little five table restaurant lies waiting as an oasis to a seafood lover like me. There were only five tables so I grabbed one of the two on the sidewalk and looked back for a waiter when all of a sudden the man sitting at the table next to me reading the paper jumped up, donned an apron and asked for my order. Sick of the so-called ceviche I had received previously at three different beach restaurants (are all the beach restaurants supplied by the same bad, overpriced kitchen? , I yearned for the ceviche I had experienced in the Yucatan but feared I would receive another bad meal. I asked the waiter how the ceviche was prepared. Almost offended he gave me a full explanation that it was rare, quickly blanched and set to marinate in lime as all proper ceviche was. I decided to give it a go and was I ever delighted. The serving appeared to be 12-16 ozs of fish and shrimp, and served in a large bowl with an orange slice and a touch of orange juice added to the mix. On the side were the traditional crackers and thick Mexican style chips. All this for only 70 pesos (about $5 US . I must have swallowed this dish whole it was so good! I enjoyed the food here so much in fact that I later returned and had the fresh fish of the day which was mahi-mahi. Being a Texan I opted for it breaded and fried and it was so delicious, it melted in my mouth. It also comes prepared as you wish if fried is not your thing. It was also priced at only 70 pesos (about $5 US . I can 't recommend this restaurant enough for fellow seafood lovers and anyone who is so disappointed by what is being served on the beach as fresh fish which smells old and tastes strong and unappealing and worst on the beach is the ceviche, which amounts to canned tuna in a glass dish with catchup. Yuck and double yuck!!! Note: This is a simple sidewalk cafe. If you are looking for Lobster Thermidor, then you should seek out a more expensive restaurant.
