The Hungry Diner - Southampton

An often busy cafe on the main High Street in Shirley. Clean and tidy cafe, hygienic place. Basic menu of good old british meal,s like sausage, egg and chips, etc. Offer cups and mugs of coffee or tea. Lovely friendly staff, who give you a warm welcome. Quick service, great tasting food.

I don't live in Southampton and a visit back to the mutant mile is always an eye opening one. Once I approached the Hungry diner the us usual mutants were sat outside, one eye between them, six toes on each hand and 50 cigarettes being smoke between the toe jam. I sat down to be approached by a lovely lady that always cooks the cheese omelettes. Now this cafe is flawless, a real greasy spoon and the coleslaw is amazing. You can get a decent cuppa (remember to check for lip stick marks, if you find them just wipe them off and carry on the tomato ketchup is watered down to pink sauce with vinegar but if you like a chavvy delight then this is the place. If they still allowed smoking this would be the place where the staff would have massive fag ends dropping off in your food. But it's clean and the food is great. Just look past the mutants outside, if they approach you act foreign (don't take your Waitrose reusable bag anywhere near them though they will rumble you Will I be back? Of course just for the omelette and appreciation of looking back :

Today I visited here for a coffee and Pepsi all good... But the place was Grubby and dirty ...Basic Menu as for the chilli con carne it should be home made surely Not bottom of the range tinned Value tinned. Yuck .. There could be room for Improvement. The staff members where lovely

Visited today and had the hungry diner omelette with chips salad and lovely creamy coleslaw. Really nice hot coffee. Lots of locals visit as it's so popular and value for money. Recommend don't eat breakfast before you visit as there's so much.

We had a lovely breakfast here when we stayed in Southampton earlier in the year and we would definitely recommend this place for a great breakfast
