Stopped by on a Saturday and ordered the breakfast burrito al pastor of the brunch menu. That and the chips and queso were both delicious! The servers could have been a little bit more attentive, since there were so few people in the restaurant, but I'll definitely be back. Edit: went back on a weekday and ordered some tacos and the tortillas were dry, tough, and chewy. Definitely not a good show when a Mexican restaurant has bad tortillas
I'm revising my review from five years ago as it's no longer accurate. I've visited El Rey twice in the last month or two, each time for dinner and drinks before a concert. Both times we sat at the bar and JB took care of us. We had so much fun each time he's really engaging and mixed amazing drinks. He really takes pride in his work and it shows. Can't wait for my next excuse to have one of his mezcal margaritas or the spicy tequila margarita. And there's a thai shrimp taco I really loved. Quesadillas are fire too. Oh and there's a DC taco with mambo sauce that is really fun! Will try to post pics after my next visit. Really just got caught up in the fun so I forgot to take any.
Great tacos and drinks, chips were not great but were cheap. The birria taco and the Al pastor taco were great! Tacos are reasonably priced for quality in the area at 4$ each. Dark image is from U street location and light image from Arlington location to better show the food.
Fine as a watering hole. Tried it for pre concert drinks eats before a nearby Atlantis show. Happy hour drink discounts till 7 on a Friday a plus. Had great bar service. The food, however, nachos and 6 different tacos were collectively a hard pass processed cheese, dry tasteless tortillas, dryed out proteins barely distinguishable one from the next.
