Booked with high as the mountains expectations for a 1330 start. Arrive spot on 1330 to be told the restaurant is full and can we sit in the basic cafe next door. What happened to the reservation, guys?? Sit in cafe next door and wait. Young girl smelling of first day nerves approaches and takes order. Soups duly arrive. One is stone cold (missed out on the microwave experience) and is sent back where it came from to be heated up. This takes 15 minutes. Crumbs. When it returns, it is at least warm and quite tasty. Original order of 2x bacalhau, 1x pork 1x turkey is served a full hour (60 earth minutes) after our arrival, 20 minutes after the table opposite who arrived at the same time and 5 minutes after the table ahead, who arrived and ordered 20 minutes after us. Can it be my dislike of cold soup set us back to the end of the orders list as punishment or is everyone just asleep? Food looked and smelled good but by this time our appetites had flown and our dog had been fried alive (hotter than the soup, much much hotter than the soup) in the carpark on the roof. This meant we ate in relays taking it in turns to walk the poor little chap to the nearest tree to pant under. When asked how our meal was I explained that it was about 80% below expectations and was offered the bill. Not going back, even to see the cave paintings. If you go, take a good book and a fold out sofa.
It is an architectural shame that the restaurant is so hard to find in this building. You have to walk down a dark staircase, upon instructions. Downstairs, the actual restaurant itself is beautiful, large windows overlooking the Douro and Coa river valleys. We were lucky to get the corner table. Service was a bit uptight, maybe because they were expecting a large group. This large group apparently did not have to behave up to COVID-regulations. We ordered a vegetarian lunch. The salad was nearly dead. The pie was still raw, and the backed potatoes were overdone and black. You do not serve this, I'd say, but they did. They were rather surprised when we mentioned it. Oh well, next time we'll go somewhere else...
