Why is it that unpretentious out of the way restaurants often have the best food? This restaurant fits that description being on a busy road in Ultimo but well known by the local Asian population. The menu is straightforward with what you'd expect from a restaurant like this. Stir fry, Lake as hokkien and Malaysian specialties. I started with spring rolls (8 for$6), then rending beef. I did ask for extra chilli in the beef which was still mild but very aromatic and tasty. Service was fine. It's a mum and dad operation. Cash only, BYO for $1 A head. Highly recommended.

I thought the food was good but the restaurant has a very odd atmosphere (Almost like someone living room in the countryside .We ordered a few things to share. The portions are good and the price is very reasonable except for the fish curry(I thought at 27$-28$ they should have use a better fish fillet rather than the flavourless basa fillets , having said that I thought the curry sauce was quite flavourful. I didn’t quite like the pork chops but overall it was a good experience . You ordered any paid the counter and it is cash only . Very homely local eatery .

In Malaysia Kopitiam means ‘coffeeshop’ but the name is recognised in places like Singapore as a food franchise selling simple and inexpensive hawker fare served fast and fresh. So too is Kopitiam located in Sydney’s Ultimo not far from Central Station and Chinatown. While the decor in this hole-in-the-wall is basic and no-frills on the plus side it’s definitely authentic as is the food. Try the char kway teow and tell them to make it spicy if you dare. Staff are friendly, accommodating and efficient, which apart from the food is another thing which distinguishes Kopitiam from other restaurants in the vicinity.
