Bidrage med feedbackLovely restaurant. Great dishes and attentive service. I'd say that the price point is a little toppy for the spec but, apart from that, hard to find fault.
When we arrived at 18:40 for 18:45 booking the restaurant was quiet, just 3 tables occupied. We were shown to a table at the back of the restaurant between 2 tables that were already in use. This seemed strange as the restaurant was empty otherwise. The area is very restricted for 3 tables of 2. Privacy was very limited and conversations from nearby tables clearly overheard, a rather unpleasant experience. The menu is limited, 4 options for each course, this was fully understood on booking and not an issue as all options were available. Food quality and presentation was good. Service was generally good, although staff seemed inexperienced and I think 12.5% service is excessive. Overall value is fair, £130 for 3 courses for 2, including a bottle of highly marked up Gavi for £41. There are better places to dine in St Albans at this price point.
Arrived for birthday late lunch meal 4pm with place empty (not a great sign for a Saturday to find only the brunch menu on offer. This wasn’t stated anywhere when booking. Literally had to leave (didn’t fancy poached eggs! Fortunately plenty of other places in St Albans with full atmosphere and table left...phew! Check before you go!
I hope Saturday night was just one of those meltdown evenings in the kitchen but to arrive at 9pm and get your Luke warm main course at 11.10pm is a tad poor by anyone’s standards. But forgivable if acknowledgement of their problem was given. But not an offer of a feee drink or anything. Sad because we have enjoyed The Abbey 2 times before without a hitch.
It is in an excellent location and intimate surroundings. Service was very good and food very good too. My Guinea fowl was slightly dry, but overall we both enjoyed the food. Atmosphere was great and we will return!
