If you're a real BBQ fan skip it! Stopped here for lunch and my husband I are were both severely disappointed. Pulled pork and Brisket were dry and stringy with very little smoke flavor. Clearly not freshly smoked that day and we're leftovers that hadn't even been reheated well. Baby back ribs were also extremely dry and the rub was extremely thick that it made them inedible. Mac and cheese sauce had a grainy texture and was served cool instead of hot. BBQ beans were good. Not worth the stop. Was expecting good food due to eating but that's not what we got.
Wanted to try the local BBQ as 4 of us were heading out hiking. The menu has several choices but today, we're out of a few things. The food came out pretty quickly. The choice of BBQ sauces was bulk purchased, not homemade.. disappointing as I can buy sweet baby rays anywhere in the US.. On to the food.. the BBQ chicken was way over cooked and REALLY dry. Basically was like jerky. Nope. The brisket wasn't sliced it was finely chopped which wasn't expected considering brisket is normally thick sliced.. lots of fat also.. The chicken sandwich was ok, just. The onion rings were drenched in cooking oil and dripping from the rings see image. There rest was reindeer sausage and freedom fries which were good (although the Santa sausage was burnt) Their iced tea was good get half sweet, half unsweetened.. nice mix. Maybe just BBQ at home instead..
I 'm going to start this review with a deep thought I had perusing this menu: What did we call Freedom Fries before #cancelculture changed their names because a country we were allied with wouldn 't go to war with us...a war no one will admit to supporting here in 2021? I can 't remember, and neither can you. Regardless, Freedom Fries are a side here! Firehouse is A-OK BBQ. I got a plate with 3 meats and 2 sides. I 'll break them down piece meal: Brisket: really dry, but most brisket at restaurants is this way. Pulled pork: pretty dry, and pretty surprising as pulled pork is usually much easier to keep moist. Baby back ribs: pretty dry, but who cares because they were easily the best o the three! Mac n Cheese: rich, decadent, awesome. Baked beans: not much different than what you 'd get from an average can at Carrs. Freedom Fries: didn 't try 'em. Collard greens aren 't available as a side, which leads me to believe this is more Texas BBQ than Southern BBQ. The biggest disappointment for me is that they don 't make their own BBQ sauces. They have a few big jugs with pumps on top to choose from though, as well as a handful of hot sauces. I blended a hot sauce with one of the BBQ sauces to make it extra spicy. The service was...absolutely amazing. Easily the best I 've had on the Peninsula and top tier for the whole state. The server was very friendly and very quick and an expert at small talk!
Great restaurant! There are many different kinds of BBQ. Terry his team at Firehouse do a great job at Texas BBQ. Great taste, generous portions, friendly staff, good price, everything we look for in a restaurant. I enjoy looking at the different t-shirts from firefighters across the US and around the world. The new location allows him to accommodate more diners and larger groups. He's done a good job utilizing the space so he can serve a lot of folks while maintaining the legally-mandated distancing. I can't wait until he can pack us in tighter so he can serve more but that's coming. My favorite is the baked potato, loaded with brisket. If you try it, you won't be disappointed!
