Demel - San Sebastian

We came here for lunch and it is the best I have ever tasted. If you are ever in the area, stop by here. We had potatoes and calamari

This tiny little bar is just delightful. Close to our hostal in the Gros area of San Sebastián, all the tapas was freshly prepared, with only small quantity out on display and a rapid change-over of food. I do sometimes wonder about the turn-over and freshness of the vast quantities of pintxos stacked up on bars groaning with food, the freshness and 'stock rotation ' and Demel has a much wider range of tapas without the inevitable bread. It also features lovely fresh vegetable dishes, the mushroom skewer was simply to die for, the nicest mushrooms I have ever eaten, garlicky and gorgeous. There was also artichokes stuffed with goats cheese and an aubergine, mozzarella and tomato stack with fresh basil, lovely. The wine was good, a good selection, with a very drinkable Rioja at 1.60€ a glass. I don 't normally eat cake (or bread for that matter) but as it was my birthday I decided to finish off with a slice of Lemon Biscoto- absolutely gorgeous, clearly home baked on the premises, with a cooked cheesecake and flan also on offer. A little walk from the Old Town, but this little gem is worth seeking out.
