We have seen this place for years both for the view on the sunset (not comparable) and for the kitchen and pizza. you can breathe a Tuscan atmosphere still authentic to the face of the chianti now too touristy in everything! and then a management that survives for decades something also means.
Last evening of our holiday, we drove up to Sticciano, Roccastrada. Fantastic views on the way up, small village at the top and Il Frantoio has an enviable view from its terrace. Unpretentious pizzeria, with good choice of antipasti, pasta dishes and pizzas. Busy with locals and holidaymakers alike, simple and relaxed. There are a few parking places right in front, but it was full when we arrived Tues eve 8pm, so use the car park at start of village and walk about 5 mins up hill and through village.
Il Frantoio is situated in the small hilltop village of Sticciano, c.3km up the hill from Sticciano Scalo. After driving the windy ascent you are rewarded with some magnificent views of forests and the plain below. After taking in the vista we worked up an appetite by taking a leisurely stroll around the village which, if the truth be known, didn't take that long. When we arrived at the restaurant we were warmly welcomed and shown to our table which was at the front so we were able to enjoy an uninterrupted view (tip book in advance). The menu was basic and Italian, as was the decor. Both seemed absolutely appropriate for the setting. To cut to the chase, the pizzas were wonderful washed down with the local plonk, which in turn was perfectly drinkable. The kids enjoyed it as well and we returned a few nights later. All in all an unpretentious, reasonably priced restaurant in a beautiful rural setting with views to die for.
