Cocula Mexican Restaurant has very recently changed ownership. It is now Mariscos Nayarit. My family made plans to meet at Cocula last Saturday night. We were shocked to see that the name has changed. The menu is entirely different and the prices are higher. The menu was not the conventional Mexican we are accustomed to. LOTS of weird seafood dishes. The service was terrible. We were seated without menus. Someone in our party went to the hostess station (which was unattended) and got some menus. The server brought chips and thin watery salsa before taking our drink orders. We didn't even have napkins or eating utensils yet. Some of our orders were not correct. Even though there is a bar, I don't think it is in operation no draught beef or mixed drinks. We asked for glasses for our beer but never received them. Despite all the cons, everyone thought their food tasted good.Cocula was our favorite Mexican restaurant and we are disappointed to see it closed. If it couldn't stay in business, I don't see how Mariscos has much chance of succeeding.
Cocula has sadly closed. The new name is Mariscos Nayarit. 90% of the menu is Mexican seafood. Tacos and other tex mex is not nearly at good as Cocula was.
Normally, I can write a book on how I feel about a restaurant. This isn't one of those times as the visit was just meh. We waited about 45 mins to get our food. We ordered: Taco Salad A Chicken Dish (I can't remember) The food was meh, the service was meh, nothing would bring me back for another visit. The rice was extremely salty the chips weren't all that fresh. The staff never came back to check on us after giving us the food. Ever got refills on drinks...nothing it was a drop and roll. Never to be seen again until they deemed it was time to bring you the check. With that, I will pass on coming back. There are tooo many other restaurants with way better food and service.
This was our go to place for the last 2 years. When it was Cocula it was great, but lacked the local support of Garner as it is not a great location. Knew many locals that would prefer the other typical style Mexican restaurants over this authentic gem. It was just a matter of time before it folded. We had take out many times during the pandemic, did our best to support them, and went in last night to dine in for the first time in months. It is now mostly seafood, had some great dishes and was pretty busy, but not the same menu as Cocula. It was way understaffed and most of the staff seemed new to the service. Menu was very difficult to read if you're not fluent in Spanish. Sign on the building still says Cocula, a bit misleading, but you quickly figure that out once inside.
