Restaurant La Campagne - Québec

After a tiring day of biking and sightseeing, my wife and I were looking for something different. As we weren't too hungry, we decided to try this Vietnamese restaurant. Service was decent and friendly and the food was delicious.

I don't know why the rating is so high for this restaurant. I visited last week with friends and their Pho soups are tiny as ant. I finished my soup in three bites and it costed $15. The noodles weren't fully cooked as well; a little hard. I've tried Pho in smaller towns and they were way better. This was one of my worst experience with Vietnamese food.

After visiting US and Canada for almost 10days, really looking forward to a bowl of hot broth Pho. After morning city tour in Quebec, read from TA about this restaurant and thought of give it a try. Initially was planning to lunch at Apsara Cambodia Restaurant but after waited until 1135am and no sign of opening hence head to La Campagne which was no mistake. I had Chicken Pho As I don consumed Beef due to religious reason and my husband had Beef. Set lunch came with starter Fried Spring Rolls and Pot Stickers which was pretty tasty. The Pho came with beans sprouts, mint leaf and lemons on the side and I asked for the red cut chillies with fish sauce, I tell you, that is anyone from Tropical country like us from Singapore which I was desperately yearning for and it did not disappoint me at all. Broth was tasty and white noodles was al dente. Said a prayer to Goddess of Mercy for pardon if broth was cook with Beef Stock which I really in need of comforting noodles in this cold weather. The tapioca pudding was comforting too. This restaurant is Highly Recommended in term of Asian’s palette standard. Total cost including complimentary Chinese hot tea was just CAD$30.

First night in Quebec, and being non fluent in French we were feeling a little nervous to converse at a restaurant. Got in, was greeted in French and I broke out my French, able to ask for an English menu, and they immediately smiled and brought English menus, complimenting us on our “attempt” at French . Great food, super fresh and well prepared. All around a great way to start off our Quebec City vacation.

Je descendais la rue Saint-Jean en direction de l'édifice fortifié du Vieux-Québec. Il était difficile d'aller contre la neige profonde et le froid pénétrant. J'ai décidé de me donner un déjeuner tôt et ai repéré La Campagne. J'ai jonglé en libérant plusieurs couches de vêtements et en grimpant quelques marches pour atteindre un restaurant tranquille, confortable mais vide. Le membre du personnel a semblé un peu surpris de me voir mais a pris des mesures. Elle m'a montré un menu. J'ai commandé de la Salade Vietnamienne, quelques petits Rouleaux Imperiaux au Porc et soupe du jour. Les petits pains étaient agréables mais n'avaient pas la fraîcheur typiquement vietnamienne dans la bouche. La salade était légère et légèrement attrayante. La soupe: j'ai oublié ce que c'était. Je peux comprendre qu'il y a un petit restaurant vietnamien dans une ville française en raison de la longue histoire de la participation de la France au Vietnam mais il était triste de voir que la nourriture n'a pas fourni la saveur et la fraîcheur anticipées. Peut-être que j'ai choisi le mauvais jour ou les mauvais articles sur le menu. Le déjeuner était une bonne pause du froid mais je ne reviendrai pas. Il y a beaucoup de meilleures options à proximité. Peut-être que j'ai été maudit pour ne pas être assez intelligent pour déjeuner dans l'un des nombreux endroits qui servent une merveilleuse cuisine française. I decided to give myself an early lunch and spotted the countryside. I juggled by releasing several layers of clothing and climbing a few steps to reach a quiet, comfortable but empty restaurant. The staff member seemed a little surprised to see me but took action. She showed me a menu. I ordered some salad, some small fried rolls (mini spring rolls) and some soup. The small rolls were nice but did not have the typical Vietnamese freshness in the mouth. The salad was light and slightly attractive. The soup: I forgot what it was. I can understand that there is a small Vietnamese restaurant in a French town because of the long history of France's participation in Vietnam but it was sad to see that the food did not provide the anticipated flavor and freshness. Maybe I chose the wrong day or the bad items on the menu. Lunch was a nice break from the cold but I will not be back. There are much better options nearby. Maybe I was cursed for not being smart enough to have lunch at one of the many places that serve wonderful French cuisine.
