Tried Horn Dawgs last weekend and was impressed. My wife and I ordered the sampler plate so we got a bit of everything. The ribs were excellent, maybe the best I've ever had. Lots of meat on them and the sauce was very good. I also thought the pulled pork and smoked sausage were excellent. The brisket was the weak point of the platter, I would rate it as just ok. The other negative would be that they don't bring a bottle of sauce to the table for those of us who like the meat a little saucier. The next time I crave BBQ, I know where I'll be heading.
Just visited the Port Perry location for another great dinner. Sat at one of the high tops further into the room, so I couldn't complain about the drafts from the front door.It was nice and warm. Had a great bowl of chili some nice cornbread and a small salad. All was perfect. My friend had the burger and fries this time. It was very good and very generous. We splurged on dessert, the peanut butter square which was a real over the top treat and we shared it. It was definitely shareable and very nicely presented. The most impressive thing this time though was actually over hearing one of the servers, under the direction of the person behind the bar, politely telling a couple of customers that this would be the last alcohol she was going to serve them. That was impressive and it makes you feel good that they are being careful and are aware of how much they are serving individual clients. It was very busy at the time. Congratulations at being responsible and truly managing your bar. As a member of the community, I certainly appreciate that you are watching what people are consuming and therefore keeping all of us safe and relatively sober.Well done!
We ventured into town last night and tried the recently opened Horn Dawgs on Old Simcoe at Reach St.It was really nice to see the place busy and before entering another couple were coming out and I asked "how was it." They said great. So that was a good start. The food was excellent. The Shrimp Po'Boy was very good. More bun than I would like but next time I might ask for it in a wrap, which I'm sure they would do. I asked for Onion soup instead of the soup of the day which came with it as 1 of the option choices. That was provided for a bit more money which was fine with me.The Vidalia onion soup was very good. The ribs and wing combo was huge with very meaty ribs. The place was busy and people continued to come in as more left. There seemed to be a lot of ribs going by with all the sides, which looked great.I have already decided what I'll have next time!It is an interesting menu and not exclusively BBQ, which it great. Many different options. I saw one person who made a whole dinner out of the meat ball appetizer. The only draw back for us was that sitting by the windows, kicks off a lot of cold, so I sat with my coat on and when the front door opens in comes more draft. I doubt there is any way of fixing that, it's just the way the unit is built. Just make sure you're wearing something warm. I'm sure the inner tables were not chilly at all. Our server was very good, seemed to have everything under control and provided all the answers to questions we had asked. We saw families with small children also enjoying their meals. Kids with ear to ear BBQ sauce on their faces.I have heard the owner and man behind the ribs has a long history in the food and beverage business so this is no accident that he has opened his doors in Port Perry and seems to be starting out with a bang, or is that Bang Bang Shrimp.
My Husband tasted Horn Dawgs a few days before myself and enjoyed the lunch. When the two of us went for lunch, the owner and a couple staff were present.Service was prompt and orders taken and recieved at a good rate. If there was an issue it was dealt with right away.
