Been visiting every summer for over a decade. Back Door Donuts used to be one of the highlights of the trip. Once the Charlie (which was a donut with ice cream) was removed from the menu, we should 've known it was the beginning of the end. It has since gone from a local in the know gem, to a completely franchise like feel. The menu and recipes have certainly changed as well as the branding and length time of the wait. Before, it was well worth it waiting in line. Now, it 's nostalgic to swing by if it isn 't busy, but not so sure it is still with the hype. Maybe go once if you have never been, but you may wait up to an hour for an average donut.
OK, so I am a self-described donut snob. I won't eat the **** that DD produces. I love and support small donut shops. I went to the Back Door on my way back from dinner. Got some hot apple fritters and a glazed old-fashioned. I wish I had waited until the next morning. Old-fashioned was great. I prefer my fritters with the glaze making a crunchy crust around a moist fritter. I also didn't like the taste of the oil. Left a weird aftertaste. Go here but know it's more about the experience as it is the donuts.
When you walk in on a weekend morning and the donut shop is empty, that isn't a good sign. First of all, the staff is very friendly and helpful. I ordered a dozen donuts, and she went in the back to get me hot fresh ones. Having said that, the donuts are ridiculously overpriced, $45 for one dozen and a request for a tip. The donuts were dry and and flavorless, and a complete disappointment. We won't come back
I had heard the hype behind these donuts and since I was attending a Sox game I figured I'd give this place a shot afterwards. We preordered a few different ones to try for pickup. Upon arrival, we noticed a long line. Fortunately the preorder got us to the front and we got our donuts right away. Unfortunately, they were one of the worst donuts I've had as of recent. They were stale and lacked flavor. I ended up throwing them out. Maybe they had a bad day or these were sitting around for an extended period of time but I will not returning to find out since Boston has a number of better options.
