All of their food is served on pewter plates with an oxidized finish. Our last time there there was a white residue on our salad plate with what looked like barnacles growing. Similar appearance of an anchor that was just pulled out of the bay. When we brought it to our servers attention she didn't appear to concerned and just took the plate away without an apology.
We enjoyed dinner at Whitman House twice during our recent stay in Truro. The service was excellent- prompt and friendly wait staff. The Wellfleet oysters were delicious, as expected. The baked cod entree was fresh and well prepared. We will return and we recommend that you try the Whitman House too.
On vacation and we always make a trip to Whitman house. I'm surprised by some of the bad reviews especially the service. We have never experienced bad service , our waitress tonight was fantastic she was friendly knowledgeable efficient and just very pleasant. The prime rib and sauce was tender and cooked just right, my son really enjoyed his stuffed shrimp and filet mignon... the salad came family style , with baked potatoes , we didn't have room for dessert. Overall we had a great meal and the service was excellent
Let 's start with the building. From the outside, it looks old. Old Cape. They don 't serve dinner until 5pm so don 't expect earlier service. The inside decor is also very old Cape. Knickknacks everywhere, old buoys on the walls, dark wood, woven napkins... The list goes on. In a word I would call this geriatric in the sense that the average age of the other patrons was well over 60. I think the hostess was SHOCKED that two young men would be dining with them. I had the scrod with a butter sauce, my partner had the Seafood Newburg. While my fish was tasty, it was a very small portion. I had originally thought the prices were ok, but after receiving such a small portion I was a little irritated. Everything they served had an air of unnecessary complexity about it. The salad had zucchini summer squash rather than cucumbers. Very odd. And it was served on these small metalic dishes. The waitress, Annie, was pleasant, but again I think the shock of young patrons was too much for her and she just seemed skittish. Overall, the whole thing was a wash. I 'll never go back and have told many other people to skip it. No outdoor seating, small cramped dining room, stuffy decor and table setting. I can 't imagine they are EVER busy but if they ever were, the acoustics would be deafening. Please just skip this one until it gets better management and they overhaul the insides. Go to Sweet Savory Escapes just before this on RT 6 West and enjoy some amazing homemade pizza and ice cream!!
