Unfortunately, 'Fortune's Place' has recently changed ownership. This used to be our favorite spot for fish and chips and Chinese food, but it seems like things have taken a turn for the worse. Last night, we went with some friends and tried the fish and chips, only to find that the quality had dropped significantly. The batter used to be light and crispy, with flaky white fish, but now it was oily and tasted of cooking oil. Some parts of the batter were hard, while others were overly crispy, indicating that it may have been overcooked or sitting out for too long. My wife's fish had soggy batter, which was likely due to too much oil, causing it to come off in the paper it was served on. Additionally, the chips were greasy and consisted mostly of small, hard pieces. Our friends who tried the Chinese food reported that it was dry and lacking in flavor. It's really a shame to see such a decline in quality at a place we once loved.
I had an incredible experience at this Chinese chip shop. The Chinese dishes were flavorful and well-cooked, not at all greasy. It was definitely one of the best Chinese meals I've ever had. The chip shop side was just as impressive with amazing fish, sausages (even though they didn't have large ones), and chips. Could this be the best chip shop in Stevenage? Absolutely!
I recently had the best Chinese food I've tasted in a while at this restaurant. The fish and chips were delicious, with a generous portion size of chips and amazing curry sauce. Highly recommend!
I spent £8 on large cod small chips and curry sauce, when I got home there was very little cod it had more batter then fish, I think they should call it a batter and chips shop, what ever become of the good old fish and chop shop.On the up side I have always found the Chinese food very good.
