I stumbled upon this hidden gem after my original choice was closed. It definitely exceeded my expectations. The fish was fresh and the agadashi tofu was delicious, which is usually a disappointment at other restaurants. The only drawback was that the ice cream was store-bought. I highly recommend this place - the service was excellent and attentive. I will definitely be returning.
At Atami in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne, you can find delicious and authentic Japanese food. The sushi is fresh and flavorful, with the futomaki chilli salmon being a standout. The menu also offers a variety of enticing entrees and main dishes, with the garlic chicken being a personal favorite. However, the udon fell short in comparison. The restaurant provides a quiet and inviting atmosphere, perfect for enjoying a tasty meal without the hustle and bustle of crowds. The simple and homey decor adds to the overall pleasant dining experience.
I ordered an Atami Special sushi platter and it was ready quickly, which was a pleasant surprise as other places typically require 24 hours advance notice. The staff was very friendly and called to provide some information about the platter. The sushi was tasty and reasonably priced, although it wasn't anything extraordinary. I particularly enjoyed the sashimi. My family and I wished there was avocado in the rolls, but we understood that it was not in season. Overall, we were all satisfied with the delicious plate, and even my sensitive stomach was happy with the meal.
The decor of this restaurant has remained unchanged since the 80s. it's like being on the set of a 1988 Japanese movie and you can imagine yourself being in the outer suburbs of Osaka. contrary to an earlier review, it is run by Japanese people; we spoke to the waitress (who was really friendly by the way. we ordered about 8 entrees to share, which came to $75. the sashimi was particularly good; I liked the home style feel of the agedashi tofu but the tempura was a little bit soft; the scallops were nice but cost $11 for four small ones- scallops are expensive I guess; the nasu dengaku was standard; the lemon squid was tasty and simple. overall, I'd probably try and get better value with a banquet (which I was told could have interchangeable items or a lunch special. the sashimi was really good so I'd probably go back and eat that in summer (it was fairly cold in the restaurant in winter.
