Picchio Rosso - MONTALTO DI CASTRO

My travel habits in Italy are a bit different than they were not so long ago, so I'm no longer coming to this part of Italy as frequently as I used to. BUT... until recently this was our go-to place when we felt like going for a drive to the coast and having some good seafood. The man who runs this place was once a master chef at a very fancy hotel in Milan, now he runs this semi-hole-in-the-wall place in Montalto by the beach. The portions are generous, the seafood is VERY fresh (as it should be! and it is expertly cooked. Everything I have ever had here (yes, multiple visits! is excellent. Squid ink pasta is a dish that many tourists shy away from because it sounds weird and suspicious; trust me, it is delicious and not at all weird. It adds a richness, a flavor of the sea that is both subtle and unmistakeable. Usually squid ink is used to make pasta, but at Picchio Rosso they serve a risotto with squid ink that is absolutely divine and not to be missed. The tagliolini frutti di mare is also exquisite; really you cannot go wrong with anything here. My present travels take me back and forth between FCO and western Tuscany; fortunately this means that Picchio Rosso is very close to my usual route along Via Aurelia and so I anticipate stopping in again someday soon. Do yourself a favor, come here before or after a visit to the nearby beach or Tarquinia, you will be very glad you did!

My husband and I have been eating here for years and travel from Rome just to eat here. On special occassions, we call in advance and order the fish soup filled with the freshest fish you can find. The house antipasto is the best way to start off a meal here which offers a large variety of seafood items to start with. We have tried the pasta, grilled seafood, fish in the oven and many side dishes. The menu offers a lot for people who don't eat seafood like some of our friends. We always reserve in advance since the restaurant is always full. I feel at home here!!! The owners and staff go out of their way to make everyone comfortable. A must!!!!
