My 21-year old son surprised me by making a 5:30 pm reservation on the patio of “Wolfe of Wortley”, an eatery opened up about a year ago on what is fast becoming one of the foodie streets of London, Ontario. Neither of us had been before (and if truth be known when Jeremy mentioned he wanted to take me out for my birthday I expected a family restaurant rather than an up-scale one). We were seated on the fairly small patio immediately and the server was very attentive, going over the menu. The patio is covered, tables fairly close to one another and it faces onto Wortley, though was fairly quiet. Basically, the restaurant serves so-called small dishes with the menu separated into sections such as “starters”, “proteins” “produce” and the like. The server suggested that for the two of us we should get 4-6 plates; we went with four thinking that if needed we could order another later. We didn't and in fact were so sated we did not even have "room" for dessert or an after meal coffee. From “starters” we ordered the “trout tartare” which came in a lemon dill sauce and toast. Excellent. From “Salumi and Cheese” we chose the Charcuterie, a fairly large plate of finely cut meats with pickles, toast and a mustard. Quite nice and after two dishes we were already feeling filled. From “protein” we chose two dishes, the rainbow trout, which came as a thin strip accompanied by a fennel, orange sea asparagus sauce on the side (excellent!), and the half chicken, a larger dish of perfectly cooked pieces of chicken accompanied with a green garlic and a small tomato concoction (also excellent). The service was A-1, as was the food. One can expect to pay about $20 for each plate, and about $15 if one wanted a cocktail (I had two margaritas – both very good but in my opinion too pricey for a drink). All in all an excellent meal though if one were vegan or vegetarian the somewhat select menu would be basically constrained to the handful of options in the “produce” section of the menu. Finally, Jeremy told me that he wished for a later seating but all that was available when he called were tables at 5:00 and 5:30 on the patio-- so reservations well in advance are advised.
Over priced..we spent over $500 for 4 of us... place is too cramped and we found the waiter to be very unfriendly and non-welcoming. Couple of the dishes we ordered were excellent...pork belly and tuna tartare. No interest in going back...mostly because of the poor service!
The oysters and dessert were delicious, but the Beef Striploin for 2 was disappointing. The beef did not get a chance to rest and as a result it bled into the gravy...so much so that I could smell blood...not appetizing at all.
4 girls enjoying a night out. Was warned not to expect warm fuzzies from the staff. But they surprised us and our waiter was amazing. The food is delicious and we had a blast.I would definitely recommend to all who asked. Only negative is the beer selection, but a Caesar was an excellent substitute.
