Bidrage med feedback5 for the quality of the food however 1 for the service. Paper cups were provided as we seated but there was no water in the water tank at all. We were told that they only provide certain amount of hot tea and once it was out it was out, plus no even hot water would be further provided - they could only do chilled water as they said. (Requested by several other customers and they finally refilled the water tank when we had almost finished our meal) Furthermore, we certainly do not appreciate the poker faces the staff members gave us and there was no sauce dish provided for the big sashimi plate we ordered, which was highly unlikely to be done by any standard Japanese restaurant.
Kakuson Sushi is our favourite local Japanese restaurant situated near Kuraby train station. The small trendy restaurant house only nine tables so booking for dinners is a must. We were here for Monday dinner and ordered mixed sashimi (large), honey chicken sushi roll & teriyaki scallop roll. The mixed sashimi came first and my goodness the serving size is generous! The sashimi contains thick cut raw salmon, tuna, prawn, octopus, calamari, large scallops and arctic surf clams. A touch of tri colour prawn roes, lemon slices and shredded white turnip to garnish. All in all there were 35 pieces! All the sashimi varieties were fresh with an appetising “fish oil glow” on each piece. Biting into the sashimi pieces was a satisfying experience with big meaty texture and hint of fishy after taste. Post dinner I realized the sushi chef receives new fish stock daily and the QA control is quite tight as 40% are rejected for sashimi. Bravo! 5/5 The honey chicken roll came next with eight pieces per serving. The sushi roll contains freshly fried chicken strips and avocado drizzled with warm honey, roasted sesame & generous amount of Japanese mayo. First impression, very unhealthy (but I love it!). I find all elements of this dish works well however after the third piece you start to feel oily and boring. The marinated seaweed and ginger helps to cleanse the palate but it’s still a far cry from clean finish. 3/5 The teriyaki scallop roll was last to arrive & boy! Was it worth the wait. The eight piece roll was filled inside out with sashimi grade raw scallop and garnish with teriyaki sauce, Japanese mayo & prawn roe. The sushi was blow torched to light brown and adds a char grill taste to this dish. The overall balance was spot on with right amount of scallop meaty sweetness and teriyaki sauce saltiness. At no point sampling the sushi was I left feeling oily or bored. Minor disappointment would be the rice lacking character and flavour (boiled too long?). 4.5/5 The restaurant is self-service and considering it was full house, the food came fairly quick (25min total). The Taiwanese staffs were friendly and offered high chair and extra tissues for our toddler. 5/5 Hint: Their mixed sashimi & teriyaki scallop roll is a must try. For $42.50 I challenge anyone who can find better value mixed sashimi platter in Brisbane. I don’t recommend their rice or noodle dishes so stick with sushi and sashimi. Free hot wheat tea is available as self-service & goes great with sushi.

Heard about this eatery for a while and eventually arranged to have dinner last night. Located at the little Kuraby Square Village, this eatery did not have the advantage of situated at a prime location. However, the business sound established with plenty of regulars and take-away orders. Set-up is nice and show-cases the passion of the owner. Menu is broad and tries to offer more varieties to diners. Some of the dishes such as Deep Fried Fish Skin and Salmon Tataki, do not offer at other Japanese restaurant of the same type. Test-water the Sashimi (small) which was not bad but I still prefer the one that I had at the Sakura down the road. Sunset Fusion Sushi Roll again was good in terms of ingredients and taste but there is definitely rooms for improvement on color combination and plating skill. Fried Udon was let down by the texture of Teriyaki Chicken meat (too mushy). The Deep Fried Salmon Skin was tasteful with the matching dipping sauce and it would achieve more marks if it was more crispy. May I suggest the management to think about to provide serviette to individual diners instead of the diners need to approach the counter to grab some tissues from the only tissue box in the restaurant. It sounds too odd to me.....
