Les Halles Solanid - Lodève

I walked out of the way for 30mins to visit this proclaimed 100% bio restaurant, situated slightly out of the centre of old town Lodeve. I wished my efforts were rewarded. All the food have been prepacked as in a supermarket (like Itsu or Prêt-A-Manger etc. in absence of food preparation on location. For the hot dishes, you could heat them up in a microwave oven. This is against serving food as fresh as you can. They could have been better off heating the dishes for the patrons in a proper oven. Not recommended at all.

This is a strange place, but I like it enough to eat there regularly. The core point is nutrition; all the meals served here are nutritionally balanced, so while the portions seem small they are filling and tasty. You chose you meals which are presented in cardboard boxes ready for microwaving, or in plastic tubs (salad or desserts) from a large cool cabinet. You can either eat there or take away. They also sell a wide range of fresh organic produce, as well as wines, beers, jams, sauces... you name it, as well as localy produced sausages and other meat products. It is easy to find vegetarian dishes to eat but impossible to find vegan which is a shame. Until recently the cutlery was simply disposable plastic in a plastic wrap (which jarred with the whole healthy/bio philosophy of the place, but this has been replaced by un wrapped biodegradable disposable cutlery. You still get a plastic beaker for your drink though. Solanid are a catering company and I think they deliver ready meals to various institutions in the area. The restaurant/shop is very sleek and slightly industrial. The building is brand new (built on the site of the old cooperative winery) and the staff are friendly. It is restful and quiet and seems to be a favorite place for business meetings too. So if you don't mind eating out of a cardboard box with disposable cutlery and care more about actual nutrition this is the place for you.
