Staying with son Jonathan, we wanted fish and chips for supper. We've tried other places which were OK but a bit disappointing. Gave the Friar a go and were certainly not disappointed! Phoned order of two large and one small cod, one large and one small chips. Ready for pickup in 15 mins and, only because it was busy, only a very short wait to be served. The large cod (served with two nice big segments of fresh lemon) was a good size, the fish beautifully cooked with wonderful crispy batter -not oily at all. Chips also were good, well cooked and plenty of them. (choice of vinegar availabe). All for just less than £20 which we thought was good value for the excellent quality. Will be going to The Friar again for sure!
Never mind the other reports and the rather 'careworn ' décor. We had Cod and Chips and it was the best we 've had in a long time.
There are better options in Lewes. The menu is dirty, and the service is also dirty. The food hygiene rating is only 1 out of 5. Even the public areas are not clean. It makes you wonder what the unseen areas look like.
I visited the takeaway on Monday, June 13th and ordered a large battered sausage, chips, mushy peas, and a can of coke for £7.10. Unfortunately, the chips were frozen and poorly cooked, with a bland sausage. The overall quality was disappointing and felt like a rip off. The staff seemed familiar, with a lady stepping in to help the guy cooking my food. It was odd to see a sushi bar on one side and a fish bar on the other. It seems like the establishment may have changed its name from The Friar to Big Fish due to bad reviews.
