Kains Bar and Cafe - Launceston

The Kains Bar and Foundry cafe have now closed for demolition. It was also known as the River View Hotel. It has an interesting history as the Kains was a ship wreck which was used as a store on this site from 1832 until the Salmon and Ball Hotel was built here in 1849-50. The keel could still be under the Kains Bar.

Let me start of by saying that the restaurant is NOW called Rusty Jacks BBQ GRILL Arrived with great expectations left soooo disappointed Ok we ordered a platter to share which consisted of pulled pork Pork ribs Brisket Hot link sausage Half a chicken And a choice of two sides, we chose Chilli fries (their spelling) Mac n cheese Also A serving of blue cheese sauce Total $78.00 It was early in the night we were hungry We could not eat it all, not because we were full but because most of it was cold. Most of the meats on the platter had been microwaved and were not heated consistent throughout, hot on outside fridge temperature in middle, the chicken we were told by the waitress was not raw, it was supposed to be very pink because of the way it was smoked, it WAS raw! It Still had blood in the joints. The chips (fries) were served with cheese over a chili con carne mix but even the chili was not reheated properly and had no hope of melting the cheese on top. Mac N Cheese was horrible. Not sure if it was a cheap packet one. So easy to make yet this was awful. To say we were all disappointed would be an understatement. Would we return? NO. Not unless I started hearing good reviews and even then I would hesitate.

Dropped in for a beer and something to eat. The staff were friendly and helpful. The venue was nice with a pleasant atmosphere the other patrons were all relaxed and good humoured. Stayed for dinner having the blackboard special (roast pork with crackling and 7 vegetables) and the parama. Both were beautifully cooked and the flavour wonderful. Highly recommend.

Kains Bar Café is good honest pub food, not amazing but good. Décor is a bit daggy and dated. Attended a work dinner, not my ideal choice but was not disappointed.

We stayed nearby at a hotel that had a restaurant onsite and yet we ate here! Overall rating awesome. After you meal pop into the little bar area next door and knock down some pool balls too. Hahn beer is the go Cascades is for Hobart :
