Their thali is brilliant- best daal ever, rich paneer curry, a stack of buttery roti, delicious, complex/creamy pickle and flash fried garlicky sesame spinach. Served on traditional brass platters. Winning!
Straight from the bat, you get a warming welcome with a immediate sense of a homely feel , even after a few visits , the vibe always remained the same. I love this restaurant. With Nepalese food, you can really experience their culture that are influenced by dishes from China and India. My always go to is their national signature dish “Momo dumplings”. The spices and aromatics they use in the filling and their dipping sauce “Tomato Chutney” is very unique and fun with interesting flavours. Same trend of flavours followed with the dishes I had such as the Ghurkas Special , Chicken and Goat Curry. The pickled and spiced potatoes in the Ghurkas special was awesome just packed with flavour. Chicken curry just couldn’t go wrong more of a turmeric style curry, it was very good. The goat curry can be sometimes a miss at times because the goat meat can be a bit tough to chew as other times I had it , the meat was also very tender but the goat curry sauce is otherwise delicious. The manager is a very friendly man who ensures the customers are always felt with an experience that they’re a part of their warming culture.
Walked into a noisy homely restaurant with a lot of chit chat going on from each side. The decoration was good and authentic. The music is soft instrumentals from the hills. If one is from the north east india, it feels like home. The menu is authentic nepali and food is fresh done. That's one reason why serving takes a while. The curtlery are also authentic bronze. The food is good. Chicken Momo is a must try. We ordered the chicken liver grill for entree. That was heavenly.
This place was one of the places with whom I started my food journey in Melbourne. Such a humble place and people working there are warm and welcoming. I tried Nepalese cuisine here first. I had momo before back in India but the taste was authentic here. Goat curry was simply to die for. I would definitely visit this place again if I’m ever on that part.
Hello Zomatoans!<br/ <br/ On Zomato after quite a few months to share my experience about a place that I truly liked.<br/ <br/ Gurkhas happened a few weeks back when we, as a family, went to the St. Kilda beach to spend a beautiful day on a weekend. While we were winding up, my brother-in-law suggested we should have some Nepalese food. We were pretty hungry by then, and he assured us that the food at Gurkhas would be nice and it would be a scrumptious meal. In the next 30 mins or so, we were in Brunswick. <br/ <br/ On our arrival, we were cordially welcomed and seated. It was twilight by then; the artificial and the natural light together gave a cosy, warm feeling indoors after the cool breeze at the shore followed by a passing shower.<br/ <br/ We ordered the entrees followed by the main course, which included Masala Roti Shuruwat, Chicken Wings, Chicken Momos, Garlic Prawn, Sekewa, Dal Bhat with Goat Curry, Goat Vindaloo (with rice), and Plain Roti. I must admit each dish outdid the other! The flavours of the Goat Vindaloo are still fresh on my tastebuds, tangy and delicious. <br/ <br/ I must also make two confessions here:<br/ 1) The Chicken Momos were so yummy that we ordered two more servings of the same.<br/ 2) We were so full by the end of the main course that we barely had any appetite or space in our tummies for any dessert.. mixed feelings I would say.<br/ <br/ As I’m still getting into the groove on my return to Zomato, I would like to keep this review short by my standards, and leave you with the pictures to relish things vicariously. <br/ <br/ To wrap up, below are my ratings based on the 3 standard parameters:<br/ <br/ AMBIENCE: 3.5<br/ FOOD: 4.5<br/ SERVICE: 4<br/ <br/ To the team at Gurkhas, Brunswick, amazing job guys! Good on you! Keep it up. I can assure you it wasn’t my last visit. See you soon. Thanks again for making our dining experience a worthwhile one.<br/ <br/ Cheers,<br/ Partha
