During my stay in Kingston, I came to Castle Street for breakfast four times. It contains a clutch of small cafes which offer standard cafe food at very low prices. Unfortunately, I wasn't over-impressed by any of them. You'd think the competition would make them up their game, but instead maybe they'e competed downwards in price, which seems to have resulted in unispired food, premises, and staff. Of the four similar cafes--La Cigale, Don Corleone, Moulin Rouge, and La Fiesta--I found La Fiesta to be the best, which not saying much. I had the same breakfast in each cafe, an omelette, because I run on a fix of eggs every day. The standard of communication in La Fiesta was the same as in the other three cafes: none. A man took my order and returned with the omelette without saying a word. However, the omelette was OK, if nothing special, and better than in the other cafes because it wasn't greasy. This cafe also had a woman staff member, unlike the others, which made a change from the hard-male-stare serving style in Castle Street cafes. To be fair, this cafe also had the best decor--with some art prints and plastic foliage. But, as at Cafe La Cigale, was blighted by a constant loud noise from a machine, which was only partly drowned by some unbearable pop music. (I think staff get so used to such things that they stop noticing it.
Simple but great value, good selection of food and a buzz. Good coffee and very welcoming staff. Summer has space outside to watch the Kingston world go by.
The service is friendly, the food is pretty average but the price is exceptional. Great sized portions to fill you up at lunch.
Been coming here for over 10 years every time I'm in the area. The friendliest people, always happy to help, good affordable food, fast and very hardworking. A real hidden gem in Kingston.
