Parrillada Don Elias - Iztapalapa

During a five day stay in Mexico City at the end of November 2011 we enjoyed a delightful dinner at the Parillada Don Elias in the Nueva Santa Maria neighborhood (just north of Polanco and northwest of the Zocalo . Our menu selections included yuaces, a combination of Lebanese bread and many choices of grilled meat, vegetable, and cheese toppings; a truly delicious sopa Azteca (Aztec soup , and arrachera (flank steak grilled over a wood fire in the Argentinian style. Our dessert was,of all things, homemade banana bread with a delicious sauce. Our hosts were the owners, Raul and Zaide Ramirez and their son Elias Ramirez, proprietor of the sports bar Jeye 's, next door. The service was attentive and friendly. (Elias is the nephew of the restaurant 's namesake, Elias Yapur, whose photograph--together with a number of famous fellow actors of years past--were on the wall. It is an adventure to find a restaurant with this much charm in a city of 29 million people. The prices are very reasonable and the food and beverages are outstanding.
