The Sanborn's restaurants owner is no less than the richest man in the world according to the Forbes list, Mr. Carlos Slim. He has a taste for old buildings which he has helped to restore and bring back to their ancient architectural value. He did...it in Mexico City with the Casa de los Azulejos and has done the same in Puebla and many other of the hundreds of restaurants that he owns all over Mexico. The one in Puebla may not be the best choice to eat, but still is a good choice, because generally Mexican and international dishes are well prepared. But of course, if you are after a french toast or a hamburger, don't go to Sanborns', in fact, don't go to Puebla because this is the city where Mexican cuisine is of the highest quality.
A pregnant lady who wanted breakfast and a very hungry husband who wanted lunch. There was a good combo. We were not looking for authentic Mexican food but rather something very close to American food and this sufficed our needs at the time. The restaurant...seemed up to date and was not dirty.
Sanborn's restaurants in main Mexican cities are like Mc Donald's elsewhere in the world: you can find one at each corner. But Puebla is different! Although it is Mexico's 3rd largest city, there is JUST ONE Sanborn's in town: this one! All other Sanborn's (not many anyway) can only be found in the malls. So, since this is the only one in town, you'd expect it to be nice and decorated like the many beautiful ones around Mexico. But NO, that's not the case here. So, not only is Puebla's only downtown Sanborn the only one available, it is also old, neglected and unremodeled. The restaurant, finally, has no windows, so it is a real disappointment for anyone who's been to other Sanborn's around Mexico. And..about the food? Well, the review for one Sanborn's applies to all others, since the menu is exactly the same all over the country. I sugestest the enchiladas suizas. The rest of the menu is average and the cakes are frozen over the night and have no taste. Coffee IS the positive item at Sanborn's, as it is good, cheap and refills are free.
I really enjoyed our waitress! She was great! Food was good and fresh but nothing out of the ordinary. Service was the high point - all else was good but unexciting ..
