Bidrage med feedbackFew know that the ‘bar of the shoe’ is named Dulle Griet. This famous tavern located in the heart of the beautiful Flemish town of Ghent is famous because one of its beers, specifically the one that are sold at the rate of a litre in a glass enrome (so huge that it carries its own ‘reposa glass’ of wood that it does not break), requires leaving a shoe to make sure that you will not break the container or take it. The thing works like that. You enter the Dulle Griet whose door you will find in the 50th of Vrijdagmarkt - perhaps the statue of Jacob van Artevelde which is in the center of the agora- and asks ‘the beer of the shoe’ (better so to avoid confusion), blonde or toast, as you prefer. Then you remove a boot (or better if you cheat on any of your companions to remove it) and lower a basket that hangs from the ceiling. You put your pinrel's coat in there and, you get him up to the roof to make sure nobody steals it from you! Then you go to your table and enjoy your drink, so big you will have to use both hands to swallow it. When you don't want to drink anymore you go back to the bar with the intact glass and someone plays a little bell to bring down the basket. You make the inverse procerso: pull out shoe from the basket, open laces, put it back on. You've got a liter of beer on you and you've got a fun story to tell. If you don't have enough stomach to warm up a cold liter beer, you can always share it, it's something many people do when visiting the Dulle Griet. In fact, the garito is superagradable, it is very well decorated and has a very extensive menu of beers and other typical liqueurs (like almost all its neighbors). If it's the first time you're in Ghent I recommend it, especially if you don't inform your action companions. You'll leave them with your mouth open.
This is the main brewery I would recommend for anyone who goes to Ghent and likes beer. Of course it must appear in many tourist guides, but as a beer lover, I had never met with such a varied letter, which made it impossible for me to decide for a particular one. Not only that is why I would recommend it, but by the beer of the house, the Max van het huis, which can be chosen from the amber type or toast. When you ask for this beer, I think of something more than a liter that has the cup, they ask for a shoe that gets into a basket with a bell that hangs and knocks out of the ceiling (in the picture, it is between the two wheels that hang from the ceiling); of course, one walks with the barefoot the time it takes to drink this beer and return the cup... I tried the amber, about seven, and it was great. We also realized that they only let in as many people as sitting places, at table or bar, so having a beer is comfortable, without having to be overly tight.
A good number of gluten-free beer in a good location!
Absolutely recommend this place, they have a whole section in the menu for delicious gluten-free beer. also wine and wine.
Very nice! Great selection of beer!! We had the Dulle Griet 1.2L Blonde beer and it tasted delicious and was not expensive at all. You wouldn't think it from the outside, but it is very nice inside. Definitely recommended if you are in Ghent Price per person: €10–20 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Recommended dishes: Typical Belgian Beer
