Hawaiian Beanz Coffee Company

I have lived in Portland on and off for the past 6 years, and in that time period have fallen in love with the coffee culture that Oregon has to offer. I never pass up the opportunity to try new coffee shops, or to explore ones I have heard good things about. So as you can imagine, over the last six years I have tried a lot of coffee. I bet on average I go to at least 2-3 coffee shops a week. That being said, this small, humble place, is by far my favorite, and the reason is very simple. The coffee is the best coffee I have had in Portland to date. The Hawaiian coffee beans that this shop uses produce a shot of espresso that is sweet and mellow, but bold at the same time. A lot of coffee shops rely on sugar and syrup to mask the unmistakable bitterness of espresso. Hawaiian Beanz does not do that because of the nature of the Hawaiian coffee bean. Coffee in Portland is really competitive , and it seems like so many places rely on the hipness of their shop to sell their coffee, which is often overpriced, and under crafted. This place is wholesome, reasonably priced and fun, but a naturally sweet Hawaiian shot of espresso is what makes this business tick. I am a huge fan of Hawaiian Beanz because I really respect this business, and the coffee they produce. I am a longtime customer, and will continue to be as long as their doors are open. I generally don't review places because I realize that I may not have a good grasp on what is going on based on one experience. However, in this case I can say that I have never gotten a bad cup of coffee, and that I have always been treated with kindness.

My fiance is a coffee-snob. She can tell you exactly which element of a cup of coffee was poorly prepared orhow much milkfat is in a drink. Needless to say, she's beginning to rub off on me and I'm getting pretty picky about what I drink. If it's not very good (so good that I remember it), I will never go back. Hawaiian Beanz kicks butt. Let me get that out there. It is kind of in the middle of nowhere (Damascus), but is welll worth the drive. It's a mom and pop shop where you can find at least one of the family there almost all of the time. They brew Kona coffee and they do it with perfection. They also have paninis, pastries, and the like. The baristas have always been great to me every time I'm in which is fairly frequently. Great job Hawaiian Beanz! I hope that someone reads this and takes my advice!

Still GOOD! Wow, I guess no one goes to the mountain this way because if they did they would sure stop here! Check it out....Better than that dreaded Starbucks.

This is still my favorite coffee shop in the area; I come here for coffee, community, and knitting time. I love the times when I'm there and a bunch of my friends come in so that we can catch up. Right now it's in the transition stage of new ownership; the Hawaiian theme is going to be gone (not happy about that but I understand) but the quality of the coffee, tea, smoothies, etc., isn't going to change. I've made and met friends here and look forward to more years of getting to have a wonderful community meeting place here.

Very friendly staff and their Mexican Mocha's are fabulous! I go out of my way to get my morning coffee from them!
