We're on holiday staying at the sister site in Dobwalls and decided to visit The Old Mill for an evening meal. It was well worth navigating the narrow winding roads that led to the site, we were welcomed by a very lovely lady who showed us to our table. My daughter and I ordered Pina Colada's which we both agreed were the best we've ever had....they were perfectly mixed and were delicious, so lovely that we ordered another. For dinner my daughter and I had fish and chips, minted crushed peas and a side of onion rings, our friend decided on the carbonara, parmesan covered chips and cheesy garlic bread. We were served very generous portions of each, the onion rings were huge, the batter on the onion rings and fish was cooked to perfection, crisp and melted in the mouth, the fish was perfectly cooked as was the carbonara and the triple cooked chips were the best we've ever tasted. We unfortunately couldn't finish our meals as we were so full so our lovely hostess provided us with takeaway boxes so we could take the rest back with us. I would urge anyone looking for a delicious meal, reasonably priced in a beautiful setting to try The Old Mill, it's amazing. Thank you so much to the chef and the lovely lady who served us (sorry, we didn't ask your name), we had a fab evening.
This place is a bit of a hidden Gem, chef certainly can cook and likes putting flavours together in dishes. Stayed at one of the lodges on site so we used the old mill twice during our stay, they have themed nights but apart from steak night it finishes at 630pm which I found odd and frustrating when I saw a pie arrive at a table at 7pm. Hostess was very always friendly and welcoming although they were short staffed with only herself running the floor and only 1 chef, this meant a longer wait time but this did not bother us and thought they did really well considering! First night we had burgers. Menu stated burgers, lettuce tomato and red onion marmalade, I thoroughly enjoyed mine and loved the flavours, however, my husband is a fussy eater and asked for no onion marmalade, no sauce. It came with red onion within the salad ,which if I were a chef and asked to not contain onion marmalade I would also assume person does not like onion and not include it, was not stated on the menu either. They kindly made a new one but this time it had a burger sauce in which did have small prices of onions in, which was a shame as husband did not enjoy the meal, my advice for fellow fussy eaters would be to be extremely clear if you do not want a certain ingredient included in your meal, it should however be stated on the menu also. I then opted for fish and chips on Thursday and chose to have this take away, it was amazing. Not one fault, the minted peas were exquisite, just the right balance of flavours! They kindly boxed up two brownies for takeaway and ice cream which was incredible, lovely home made desert. Can’t fault chefs cooking skills, maybe just could do with being more aware of what ingredients are going into something if someone has stated not to have something. Didn’t feel this was worth knocking a star off as it can be improved on.
We had a superb meal at The Old Mill on August Bank Holiday Saturday. The Braised Beef Ribs were wonderful: beautifully cooked with great vegs and tasty jus. This from a very tempting Specials menu with many fish dishes. Friendly efficient service as ever. Well done The Old Mill: going from strength to strength.
