Riley's Bakery - Cornwall

Although we arrived late and were unable to visit the restaurant in person, we still enjoyed some delicious donuts that were part of the Cornwall Food Tour.

The new owners are not ideal, but the quality is still better than many other places. The sandwiches are generously filled, but could use a bit more salad or cheese to enhance the flavors.

Very quaint bakery, we just wanted a little snack and left with lots of treats! Great cookies!! Very friendly staff

This place is a gem of a place to go too. For lunch. Amazing fresh sandwiches. Portions are plentiful. Sweet desserts also available Bring cash as I don't recall seeing a debt machine.

As I walked down Pitt Street in Cornwall, I couldn 't help stopping to take a look in the front window.Years before, as a kid, I peered in this same window to view the workings of a donut making machine. I remember the induced captivating feeling...as I watched this machine flip donuts in a pool of grease as a horizontal micro ferris-wheel keep them in motion. Alas...there is no machine here anymore. You have to go to Crispy Creme to see one these babies. As I enjoyed the nostalgic moment, I couldn 't help noticing the people exiting Riley 's Bakery with a brown bag in hand. I ventured in to be greeted by a barebones mom pop type bakery. Counters and display cases were undesigned, lighting was dismal and item labelling was unreadable; yet the shop was configured in a way that got the job done. On the senses side of the equation, the fluffy, doughy goodness filled the air; no doubt due to the dedicated work of the bakers in the wee hours of the morning. Locals love this place and in the lunch part of the day, the crowd can snake around and about the store and even outside the door, all to order one of Riley 's legendary sandwiches and maybe wash it down with a pastry. You can select sandwiches with turkey, ham, smoked meat,roast beef and more. The bread is phenomenal. The delicacies are numerous: date squares, raspberry cookies, lemon tarts, croissants, cinnamon buns and more ...all homemade. Customers refuel at Riley 's to power-up for the afternoon chores at hand.There are no seating arrangements in the bakery, but some cannot resist the temptation to eat on the spot or upon exiting the store. I tried a smoked meat, It was not Dunn 's, Montreal, but it was close.The raspberry cookie I purchased, I ate before I got to the door so I went back and ordered a dozen. Riley 's Bakery is a tiny shop in a small city but offers big city flavour to it 's customers.The maestro 's of the establishment; an industrious pair of individuals, work their heart out to service the entourage of customers that frequent the shop. Everything is scratch-made, and this kind of dedication, inspiration and effort is also rolled up into the dough that is the fabric of all food items in Riley 's. Although the shop is very mild on modern decor, it is a bakery diamond in the rough ....and that is The Life of Riley 's Bakery.
