The Swan At Ascott - Chipping Norton

WE had a fantastic Sunday lunch at the swan, so goof in fact that we have booked to stay (and eat) for a weekend in March.

We stayed and ate here for an anniversary and it made for a really lovely weekend. Never before have I been anywhere where the staff were so lovely! Each and every one of them are a credit to The Swan

Ice cold poached egg with the yellow removed, on chilled toast. Very odd. The poor manager has to explain it was the chef 's vision . Horrible.

We had a lovely meal with friends here on a Saturday night. We were seated in the dining room which is gorgeous but as there was only one other table of 2 there at the same time as us there wasn't much atmosphere. I think this was really because there was a local festival the same weekend and many people would be there for the weekend. We only had one course (too full for pudding! Three of us had steak and chips lovely steak and AMAZING hand cut chunky chips (I would go back for this! The other had the pork chop which was decreed tasty but quite low on meat vs bone and fat although he didn't say this until a couple of days later! We started with a round of drinks each they had a great gin list, however there are no prices on this so it's difficult to choose what's worth it to you! Overall we really enjoyed ourselves but felt that value for money wasn't amazing £45 per head for one course, a drink and some wine but not so much that we wouldn't go back and we did after all order a lot of steak! We live 5 mins from the group's other pub (which we have also had great food at so unless we want a good pub walk we might be tempted to stock with this pub rather than the swan but i would definitely recommend both to friends! We were staying in the village at a local b b so chose The Swan as we were able to walk. We are two girlfriends meeting up for a walking weekend and wanted to have dinner on both Friday Saturday night. The first thing we noticed was the absolutely charming service. All the waiters one waitress were local young people nothing was too much trouble. They were all sweet friendly polite attentive to a fault. The swan itself has been stunningly restored (we know their sister pub The Bull in Charlebury we were offered a seat in either their cosy bar or restaurant. Both of which were very nice spaces we sampled both. However we weren't so entirely thrilled with the food which from the menu promised much didn't really deliver. On the first night I had a pasta dish which was OK but small in portion distinctly ordinary (I'd been told this involved basil Parmesan bacon but which was very dry for which I paid £15. My friend had chicken which she also thought dry on the small side (with no accompanying sides for £14. The following night also proved disappointing. My chicken Kiev was dry salad (which I'd requested in place of mash was a pile of undressed leaves . Again for £14 £15 I was hoping for more something more tasteful. The wine (a Sauvignon Blanc was delicious we liked the puds. The Swan has a friendly very nice atmosphere but by any standards we felt the food wasn't up to scratch overpriced.
