Under the blue awning on the way in Chelem is a cute little cocina economica called Los Potrillos, large omelets and daily cocina specialties such as pork and beans, (the pig pieces are huge and fleshy, fall off the bone well. Large container feeders 2 or...3 for 50 pesos. Large pollen empanizado (baked chicken) with beans reissalat for 60 pesos. Very popular with expats that feed a house of workers, great big chicken totas on huge baguette with fresh bread chicken, ham cheese avocado, salad, tomatoes, for only 25 pesos, a little more than a dollar! They are open every day when most restaurants are not. You can always get a good meal at Los petrillos
Los Potrillos serve well, homemade Yucatecan foods at great prices. Breakfast is large, filled and well cooked. The Tortas especial are very valuable and will really fill you. It is a cozy place with good local food. Daily specials too.
This place is family-run and operated. To say that there is nothing like in this place would be an understatement, but if it is a good meal at a great price, this place cannot beat. The meals are open for breakfast and lunch...big and very full. You will get a selection of about 6 items most come with a $50 Peso price. I've been here many times and I've always been full. It's my way to pick up lunch for the work crew. The staff is friendly, there is no air conditioning and everything is open so if you want to cook them and prepare your meal. I had everything on the menu and enjoyed it all. This is not an ex-pat food, nor is it ex-pats do Mexican food. These are Mexicans who make traditional Mexican dishes. Not only that I'm going back, I'm going back almost every day.
Breakfast here was good and plentiful. Service was good, but slow. It wasn't a problem because we were on Mexican time anyway. It was inexpensive; definitely worth the price. We watched the lady behind the counter squeeze our orange juice into large glasses. The ambiance...is pretty typical. Next time we're in Chelem we'll go there again. We own a house there so we WILL go back. It is one of the few places in Chelem where you can get breakfast.
