Avenue Deli - Calgary

I happened to see this place from the bus window and thought I really must try it as I haven't been to Montreal in a while......the reuben was delicious and I splurged w/ a chocolate milkshake which was on the lumpy side but tasted delicious. Nicely presented with a pickle in a basket, these fresh sandwiches are the closest you're going to get to smoked-meat heaven in the west.

Had my first meal and here and what a delight. The Reuben was divine; melt in your mouth Montreal Smoked Meat, spicy! Dijon, a somewhat subtle sauerkraut, light rye...The soup was a totally different flavour profile and was a weird match to the Reuben(100% my fault) but a few bites in I was immersed in a tangy curry chicken soup which was equally as good if totally different. The soup is always gluten and dairy free, there are gluten free options, and everything is made fresh to order. The owner, Nikki, was on site and checking to see that everyone was happy and well fed. The staff was friendly and efficient. Spend your money here!

We decided to try a lunch at this deli, that had been a very highly recommended place from a friend. First impression looking at the menu board was the prices, and after we got our meal, wow, they are truly over priced. We did like to have the mustard choices, the pickles were also a disappointment , expected a much more "kosher" style. The sandwiches are not nearly big enough for the price, and the amount of inedible fat and gristle in the meat was disappointing. They need to train the staff how to trim the meat, and also maybe look for a different supplier who has a better cut.

I visited here on a weekday for supper, and was so impressed! This is a small place, tucked away on a corner, and it serves the greatest food in a clean, comfortable setting. The menu offerings are wonderful, and as a former Montrealer, I can say that their Montreal smoked meat on rye with pickle, is superb. The meat was melt in your mouth quality, and they have a selection of mustards from which to choose. Another wonderful menu item is their selection of real milk milkshakes. The vanilla one was terrific, served in a metal container just like "the old days." They also have a huge selection of coffee, tea and juices. Lox and cream cheese is also on the menu, and it is wonderful too (we returned a second time for lunch as the food is so good). The servers are pleasant and efficient, and one orders first and the food is brought to your table. A stroller was easily accommodated in the eatery, as there is enough floor space for everyone. Avenue Deli is addictive!

Went there recently with friends and had a great lunch. The deli is fairly small with only about 6 tables so it is advisable to get there a little early for lunch in order to be sure to get a table. The food was prepared and brought to us quickly. There are many choices on their menu.
