You think you're Berlin cool? Not until you've been to a rooftop beach bar in Berlin, then you're not. Did I mention this is at THE MALL??? German efficiency wins again. You get your shopping done, get your nails done and suddenly, you're thirsty. Now what? Pay the 1 euro entrance fee and head straight to the tiki bar set up. An ice cold Hefeweizen or a G&T will be waiting for you. You'll be given a token keep it so you can have your deposit back. (this ensures the bartenders that their glasses are returned to them! Pick a spot whether it's on the daybed (popular and always taken , the benches or those beach chairs that you can dig into the sand. YES. Real sand! Watch out for overly chatty Germans, they mean no harm, but if you want peace and quiet ... let's just say this isn't the place for that! ; so put on a smile and make new friends! Prost!
The last time I went here it had a €1 door entry fee. Now, it 's €3. So 4 of us pay, obviously, €12 so if you 're only wanting one drink, it 's a bit pricey. Beers were ok but one friend had a 'Skinny **** ' basically vodka, lime and soda water. He put still water in it!! Although the barman changed the drink to soda water, €9!!!!?? It 's a shot of vodka ffs! I know this is thought of as a 'hipster ' cocktail and the hipsters of Shoreditch might be happy paying through the nose for but vodka and water do not a cocktail make! My other friend had an 'Aperol Spritz '. We witnessed the Spritz wrongly made: A small wine glass was used with too much ice for the glass size (it should 've been a bigger red wine glass), then filled mostly with Aperol. A splash of Prosecco and topped with soda water... €8!! Apart from the bartender not displaying any signs of experience, the other guy (who takes your order and you pay), had presumably been on the lash the night before and gone straight to work on the till. He was quite obviously shot away! After all that, the place is a lovely oasis and they 've done a good job making it that way. It 's a little more than your average Berlin beach bars with good music and as well as plentiful deck chairs, there 's loads of sheltered seating and pergola type seating areas. Haven 't tried the food so can 't comment apart from it looks good pizzas and tortilla dips etc. All in all, a nice place for a few drinks (to make the door charge worthwhile), and personally I would steer clear of the cocktails!
I went for pre-dinner drinks around 9:00pm on a Tuesday night. Thankfully I was able to enter through the mall and take the elevator... cuz that's a lot of stairs. The place was packed, but we still had options (sharing a table with another couple, a couple of beach chairs in the sand. The people were chill, the music wasn't overly loud. It's definitely more of a chill scene rather than some clubby atmosphere. Drinks were reasonably priced for a scene-y place and the bartenders were nice.
Schade! Der Winter kehrt zurück. Bleibt Deck 5 offen? Weiss jemand?
