Good food. Nice meat and nice desserts all for a good price. Service was in the beginning not friendly. But it became better. i think she had a hard time.
We had decided to look for a cheese shop at Santiago da Guarda (as you do) still with no intention of eating out but as we passed by Santiago, one of our favourite lunchtime haunts, I asked Margaret if she fancied lunch. Bear in mind that we have been sheltering from Covid 19 for a long time and whilst I cannot speak for my child-bride, I am no spring-chicken and have numerous health concerns so eating in a restaurant is no small matter. But I digress. Wanda welcomed us as before and took us to a table apart from the herd and took our order. We both had the soup, a Portuguese staple but here, it has always been more delicate than a lot of places. I had ordered a glass of wine and upon tasting it, regretted that I had not ordered a half litre. It was extremely smooth with a bouquet redolent of picnics in a meadow. Delicious. Anyway, her nibs doesn 't like to drive. as Wanda poured my glass, I had a tickly non-Covid cough and she said, The wine is good. I think she meant good for the cough but I offered Margaret a sip and she remarked that Wanda was right, not necessarily for the cough. For our main courses, Margaret had salmon and I had turkey bifanas with mushrooms. Her salmon steaks (note the plural. There were two of them) were served with chips and salad and Wanda had remembered that my beloved doesn 't like the ubiquitous rice. The salmon was delicious. I know because I helped her finish them. My turkey was exactly how I expected it: tender with a creamy sauce with rice and chips. Let me tell you about those chips. They had left the skin on the potatoes. We always leave the skin on our potatoes (except mashed, in which case we keep the jackets separate) and we believe that the goodness is in the skins. My lunch was delicious. I had forgotten to tell you that. Sorry! Margaret didn 't want a pud until she heard about the coffee mousse so we both had pud and I had a cup of decaf. The bill came to €16 and I asked where the wine came from. The boss came out and told me the price which was £4 more than I usually pay......for 20 litres. A bargain, bearing in mind that it was so much better and the 20 litre box now resides on our kitchen worktop much to my dear wife 's chagrin. Now here 's a piece of advice. Lunchtime around here starts at about 13h00, Portuguese time. If you wait until then, you probably won 't get in. It is popular because it offers good food at good prices with incredibly friendly service. It is not large enough to be viable with 2metre social distancing but our table was far enough away from others for us not o be nervous. And the cheese shop? Well I had this cunning plan and so Margaret is going to locate it on the interweb and we 'll come back next week. Maybe have some lunch at Santiago again.
