El Zunzun - Vestavia Hills

We came to celebrate a birthday with family. We tried a number of different items. I loved the desserts... everything was really good and homemade... the only thing I was not really in love with was the warm salsa. I guess maybe it 's like warm tap beer you can get in the UK, but I prefer cold, refreshing salsa.Food: 5/5

We really liked this place.Not the best Mexican food I have had, but definitely in the top 5 near Birmingham.Great salsa and guacamole.Tamales were goodEl pastor tacos were decent.Good service and fun atmosphere.Prices fairly reasonable.

Very well decorated place, Mexican environment, good service, very friendly, clean, they have a lot of good tequilas, mezcal. We ordered queso fundido with cheese and chorizo and nachos with steak. They have parking lot and arrive at 6:00 pm

We went Saturday night for a birthday dinner, and will never return back. At 9:13pm, as we were literally putting food in our mouths, the server asked if he could bring our checks and to-go boxes. I looked at my watch and said I thought you closed at 10pm? He said oh we do, but if it’s not busy, we close at 9pm. Then he said if we wanted, he could ask the manager if we could stay. Ummmm, ask the manager if we can stay during normal open business hours? Sure. They turned off all the lights inside, sat in the dark, and watched me clear the plates from our table. They then came out, said they were going home, locked the doors, and told us to exit out of Leaf and Petal. On top of that, the food was disgusting. The mahi mahi on the tacos was in the shape of big rectangles. A big rectangle of meat, with a soggy tortilla wrapped around it. The nachos were insignificant, basically just tortilla chips swimming in a sea of queso, topped with shredded lettuce. Disappointing all around, especially since it was a night to celebrate someone’s special day.

A nice peaceful atmosphere, made for enjoying your food. Busy alot of customers but still a great atmosphere. I got the Tamales. Authentic and tasty. The rice was flavored very nicely and so were the black beans. I will return.Food: 5/5
