Gilberts El Indio - Santa Monica

We were warmly welcomed by the host, who was very friendly and helpful. All the staff at the restaurant were welcoming as well. It seems like there are many regular customers who frequent the restaurant, which is a good sign. Our combination plates cost between $16 and $17; the tacos were larger than typical street tacos. The rice could have been a bit softer, but the standout was the 'diablo' salsa, which was made fresh daily by different servers. It was fun to know who made the salsa depending on the day we visited, especially if we become regular diners.

Located in Santa Monica, this Mexican restaurant offers generous portion sizes. I visited after a hike for a late lunch on a Sunday and was seated promptly around 3pm. The option for outdoor dining is available. There is complimentary parking in the back of the restaurant or metered street parking can be found. Credit cards are accepted. The restaurant features bathrooms by the bar, with cute tarot card decor above the sink. Checking in on Yelp includes a free drink with the purchase of an entree. Free chips and salsa are provided. The food arrived quickly and leftovers are guaranteed. I ordered the mule burrito, which was covered in cheese and salsa verde. It included rice and a Chile Ortega on top. My friend ordered tacos, receiving one hard shell and one soft shell. The food was satisfying and alcoholic beverages are available. Margarita pitchers are an option for larger groups. Overall, this is a casual spot where you can get a good value and enjoy delicious Mexican cuisine.

This restaurant is an incredible family-owned gem for delicious Mexican cuisine on the west side. The enchiladas and homemade flour tortillas are absolutely delicious. It's clear that the family puts a lot of effort into their food and service. Overall, a wonderful dining experience.

Hands down the best margaritas in the city. Love the whole menu, especially the crispy tacos. Been going here since the 90s. Spacious outdoor dining now. LOVE Gilbert’s!
