Bidrage med feedbackHere after a walk on the coast. a perfect place to have fresh oysters. they are sitting on picnic table with a view of the river. they are only serving oysters, and they are super fresh and delicious. You can get broth and wein to go with them. what more do you want?
It can no longer be fresher than here. they have their beds, to the pool in the backyard. these oysters are finished in their own pool of balon river water in the hof where they are scooped and served. the oysters are beautiful and. they are professionally open to them. they have a chance to take them over the road to a picnic bench overlooking the beautiful belon river. they serve wein on the bottle or glass. they take a bank card or credit card. this place is very authentic and has a great atmosphere. to get a look at the castle, go to the hill left and they will see the front of the castle. pretty impressive. not really easy to find, but google maps have us there.
You can eat outside overlooking the river, or you can eat in the absolutely nothing-fancy court yard where the oysters are removed from the ancient concrete holding pen and opened for you. There is one picnic table in the court yard, and I used it...because I loved the idea of eating in the shed while watching the oysters in the pen growing bigger and bigger (as it were). Now then, what about the oysters. A lot of people come to SW Brittany to eat oysters. The huge majority of those oysters are Pacific Ocean oysters that are raised in the waters of Brittany's Gulf of Morbihan and on up the coast. BUT, a completely different species is the flat or Belon oyster, and I ordered the Belons. They were small (No. 5), so I ordered a dozen. The Belon shells are circular, not elongated, and the oysters are absolutely delicious and nothing like you've ever eaten before. The service at Chateau du Port de Belon is plain as can be. It's administered by the fisherman in tall rubber boots and a heavy rubber apron and heavy rubberized shucking gloves. The oysters arrive on a plain dish, no fancy bed of kelp, no lemon, just a basket of dark bread and your drink (they have no beer, and anyway all the oyster joints along the coast offer Muscadet wine, so that's what I drank, and with great pleasure). So, we're talking a fundamental eating experience of a world-class oyster (Belon) that you may very well not find at any other place on the Brittany coast (I could not get them three days later in Cancale, which is also famous for their Belon variety oysters). If you prefer the river view (which is fabulous bring a picnic that contains everything except the fresh-shucked oysters.
We had seen the Anthony Bourdain episode a few years ago depicting the Riec Sur Belon area and the oyster farms. I have been reluctant to eat oysters from the US due to our polluted oyster beds. The Belon area in Brittany has little industry...and resulting clean tidal waters to enhance the quality and safety of the raw oyster experience. We had an optimum experience on a picnic table in the sun overlooking the tidal estuary and the oyster farming . Textbook perfect conditions and rural service with a smile from the proprietors made the delicious fresh oysters a highlight of our week in the area. Chez Jacky was adjacent but closed the day we visited. I think we had a more authentic experience as we were outdoors on the riverbank at Huitrieres du Chateau de Belon. Go there and enjoy.
Deux bons moments passés sur ce lieu de dégustation lors de notre séjour en vacances. Accueil dynamique et produits d'une grande fraîcheur dans un cadre insolite.
