Delicious home cooked vegetarian food black beans over brown rice, grilled courgette and broccoli and spinach quiche featured on today's menu. The fabulous ladies who run the restaurant don't speak English, and my Portuguese is minimal and appalling, but they're friendly and patient and with a lot of pointing and smiling, you can get a copious lunch for around €5. Freshly pressed juice is available too. Even if you're not a vegetarian, do seek this place out if you're weary of the meaty overload in Porto it's worth the trip.
So i may stand corrected on this statement.. the choices at most restaurants were quite meaty in Porto... so opted most of the time to seek out vegetarians establishments...have to say it was worth the walk... although posted on sites to be open all day they tend to have down time between meals... visited for lunch.. you have bread, soup, juice, meal of the day and salad for just over five euros..i opted for roasted sweet potatoes, brown rice and veges of the day..the juice is made fresh and on the day it was carrot.. all very nice
Salpicos Verdes may not be on most tourist trails in Porto but it is well worth a trip on the metro to find. We went there for lunch and were made to feel very welcome when we arrived although it became very apparent the two ladies serving could not speak English and sadly we cannot speak Portuguese. The starter was a selection of mixed salads served in a buffet style which was fresh and tasty, the main was served at the counter and we were given a choice of 4 or 5 dishes, all of which had been freshly prepared and had a home made feel about them which added to their deliciousness. We also had freshly crushed apple juice which was delicious and refreshing, and their coffee was very good too. The decor is honest and straightforward and reflects the fact this cafe is here for the locals and not passing tourist trade. When we were there, there was a steady stream of customers, all of whom seemed to be enjoying the food as much as we were. This was one of our most enjoyable dining experiences in Porto, not only because of the food but because of the charming, bubbly and friendly staff, who did not let the language barrier stop the from making sure we were happy.
