4.5/5 for La Maison Kam Fung. As far as Chinese food goes, Kam Fung knows what 's up. Located right in Chinatown, like most of the best places are, La Maison Kam Fung is the type of place that doesn 't serve Chinese food for white people I didn 't see a single chicken ball on the menu! . They just serve Chinese food, which I greatly appreciate specifically Cantonese and Szechwan cuisine . Voted #1 Best Chinese 2013 in Cult MTL 's annual poll, I added them to my list. Plus I keep hearing things about their fabulous dim sum. You 'll need to go up to the second floor to find this gem and once you 're there you 'll enter into a huge windowed room. This is exactly the sort of place that serves amazing dum sum, just by the look of it. Almost banquet hall style, the space is expansive with many circular tables dotting the entirety of the room. The décor is quite minimal, however there are some pretty amazing dragon pillars and some beautifully ornate wall decorations and floor screens to help break up the space. The best part? 95% of the patrons enjoying their dinner when we arrived were Asian a wonderfully good sign, as far as I 'm concerned.<br/ <br/ We were seated at one of the smaller tables and the friendly and efficient server brought us a pot of green tea right away. Although the dim sum is supposed to be wonderful, it 's more of a lunchtime thing, and we were there for dinner. Flipping through the HUGE menu took quite some time! There is so much to choose from and I noted the abundance of quality ingredients and high end plates, including plenty of seafood and lobster. We meticulously went though every page, creating a mental 'short list ' and narrowing down our favourites.<br/ <br/ To begin with, Hot Sour Soup $3.50 . When done well, hot sour soup is one of my big favourites, and this one was done exceptionally well. In fact, this was likely one of the best if not the best hot sour soups that I 've ever had. What makes it so good? It 's really quite obvious and simple: It was really hot and really sour! They were holding nothing back and this soup packed a nose runningly amazing punch, just the way that I like it. The flavours were complex and perfectly balanced. BIG YUM!<br/ <br/ Next we ordered the Crispy Spinach $5.95 as a bit of an appetizer. I 'd heard that it 's a must try. This dish was fascinating! It was almost like eating air, that 's how light and delicate each leaf of spinach was. Each mouthful would shatter as soon as it got into your mouth and melt away. But most surprising was that the leaves were sugared and sweet. I 've seen plenty of fried herbs usually as garnish in my day, but this dish was doing something completely new to me.<br/ <br/ For our main meal we decided to go with the Peking Duck Dinner for Two $45.00 . This particular meal seemed to include many of the dishes that we were most interested in, packaging them into one easy to order bundle. Our server warned us that it was going to be a lot of food, but since Chinese food makes excellent leftovers, we weren 't too concerned. First to arrive was our Half Peking Duck for Two! Pronounced pee king not peck ing , this dish can be awfully intimidating if you 've never seen it before, especially if you 're not expecting it to arrive with so many parts! Kam Fung serves it just like they do in Beijing, which was awesome to see. If you 've ever been to an Asian supermarket, you 'll surely have seen these ducks hanging in the window. The hanging technique leaves more space for rendering fat to drain, resulting in crispier, drier skin. The duck is served in slivers of breast meat and rich, lacquered skin on a platter. Ours was served on a bed of crispy prawn chips. The dish is also served with bó bǐng thin wheat based pancakes that reminded me of roti , fermented bean sauce similar to hoisin, but saltier , mild pickled vegetables, thinly sliced scallion whites, and cucumber batons. The idea is to make yourself a tasty little Chinese burrito out of all of the items provided. I definitely did not have a lot of finesse in doing so, but I certainly tried my best! The duck itself was truly wonderful, with impossibly crispy and delicious skin creating a shield for the surprisingly super tender and juicy meat underneath it.<br/ <br/ Next to arrive was the Chinese Vegetable with Garlic. This was mostly take it or leave it for me. The baby bok choy was mainly bland and watery with a hint of garlic. Yet, they were tender and well cooked. I only had a few of them and saved my precious stomach space for the good stuff! We were also served Steamed Rice to go along with the meal.<br/ <br/ Next was the glorious Stir Fried Duck Meat with Garlic Sprouts. This ended up being my favourite dish of the night! The duck was so juicy and tender, served in a light sauce, while the vegetables were bright and lively. I loved the saltiness to the duck and every bite was so savoury and flavourful. The peking duck was an experience, but this duck surely won the meal.<br/ <br/ We are not finished yet! Chinese Style Filet Mignon! This dish was also quite memorable and excellent. The ultra tender slices of filet mignon were bathed in a savoury sweet sour type sauce and it was impossible not to want to get the sauce onto everything. The meat was not overcooked in the slightest and melted away in the mouth. Chinese food can be so much more than ginger beef! FYI: Ginger beef. Not Chinese food. Invented in Calgary. <br/ <br/ Lastly, our meal included Dessert, which ended up being some orange slices. A little bit sad as far as desserts go, but on the other hand, I 'm not sure that we could have eaten much else. I enjoyed them along with my fortune cookie somehow the the tastiest fortune cookie ever and my tea.<br/ <br/ La Maison Kam Fung was a wonderful experience in authentic Chinese food. I currently know of no better place and I cannot wait to return at lunchtime to try their dim sum!
My favourite place for Dim Sum. The ambience is original like in Hong Kong: chaotic, noisy , dynamic. The food is great, a lot of varieties, with the ladies pushing the carts and you can choose whatever you like. If you are not a mandarin speaker, it is a bit problematic since some of them cannot really speak English nor French.
I wonder if this restaurant has ever had an identity crisis. The neon sign facing the street clearly says Kim Fung, their website says Kim Fung, but everywhere else the name appears as Kam Fung.<br/ <br/ I have been exploring Chinatown recently, and decided to give this location a try. The restaurant is upstairs, inside a small office building/mall. The dining room is reasonably large and neat, with white table cloths. The servers were pleasant and helpful.<br/ <br/ I started out with a small bowl of Hot and Sour Soup. Savoury and tasty, with just the right amount of spice and vinegar for my liking. Then it was on to the Spring Roll; crispy on the outside, without being too oily. For my main dish I chose Pepper Shrimp with Crispy Spinach. The shrimp were plump and succulent. The spinach was very interesting. I had never had deep fried, crispy spinach before; each bite crumbled in my mouth. They must have sprinkled a little bit of sugar on it, which gave a nice sweet balance with the savoury shrimp.
Unique experience which I recommend. Kam Fung is located in a 'mall ' building in Chinatown and usually there is quite a lineup around noon, but worth the wait. I 've been a couple of times and sadly the food quality has gone down. Even then, there is a good variety of food and most dishes are quite tasty. This Dim Sum is very good and the service is quick and the food is cheap. I recommend this experience as it is a good place to try new foods!
