Bidrage med feedbackI've been to Chang in Grünwald and in Solln a few times now. I went to Grünwald for lunch with a friend I had invited. We had a not so pleasant experience and I'm sorry I chose this place to go to for Asian food. The food is average and the price is -too- high. But most of all, the service is rather unpleasant. One waiter was very nice and friendly, but the other two were outright unfriendly, almost rude. I'm not a regular there; this restaurant was suggested by friends as an option for a dinner out, but I will from now on definitely propose a different restaurant to go to. And I shall explain to them why! The vegetables in the Thai curry were very undercooked -practically raw- and most had to be put aside, especially the beans. We pointed this out to the waiter -when we finally managed to draw his attention in a rather empty reseaurant- and the answer was: this is how the Thai always cook it! We said to him that that's not the case, Thai people don't eat raw beans, but he insisted, telling us that he lives with a Thai partner. I have lived in Thailand many years and never had to eat raw beans, which I told him. He then left our table and never came back again. Paying took very long; the nice waiter brought us the bill and then we had to wait 15 minutes for someone to pick up my credit card. We were not in a hurry, otherwise we would of course not have waited so long! The nice waiter appologized when he saw us out and Mr. Chang, who had been sitting there with local guests all the time, said: "Auf Wiedersehen", but we were not offered any compensation for the inedible veggies in the curry! No coffee on the house or something of the sort. But why should they; raw veggies are the norm, apparently, so the waiter told us. I called Mr. Chang afterwards, and he apologized for the vegetables and the long wait to pay and he told me to ring him in advance of our next visit. But there will not be a next visit; there is a Vietnamese take-away not too far away that serves good food for a good price and that does not leave an unpleasant feeling after a visit there. Chang prefers regulars who are willing to pay a high price for average Asian food because it's at Chang's in Grünwald and who get a better service, I would hope for them.
It's highly recommended to make a reservation. It's quite narrow and not very cosy Chang is always fully booked. The tuna sashimi is a dream, the curries are excellent, Everything is super fresh and tasty. One of the highlights is the lemongras creme brulé exceptional
My last recommendation for Chang was a year ago. In the meantime we visited the restaurant several times and it became everytime better and better. Chang is -concerning the quality of food and preparation- one of the best restaurants I know. And I know a lot !People from all over Munich come to Grünwald to have diner at Chang. So it's highly recommended to make a reservation. Chang is always fully booked. The tuna sashimi is a dream, the curries are excellent, Everything is super fresh and tasty. One of the highlights is the lemongras creme brulé..... exceptional...Ok the restaurant is concerning interiors not on the level of of his cuisine. It's quite narrow and not very cosy. But that doesn't matter...what count's is the quality of food. For me Chang is no.1 not only in Gruenwald but also in Munich!
I have been going to this restaurant on and off for some time including take aways. For me this restaurant has always been overpriced with small portions, a limited and repetitive menu which has seen few changes over time. While soups are good, and a few excellent deserts - the main courses are generally very expensive (read hugely overpriced) and generally mediocre by my judgement (I have lived in Asia and sampled many very good European Asian restaurants). The result of overpricing is that this restaurant has a relatively sniffy clientele, which no doubt attracts certain customers. On our last visit the service (which is generally quite OK) was very rushed as the restaurant attempted to maximum utilisation of it's seating, with each course following almost on the last bite of the previous course (not making for a pleasant evening) and the main course was returned undercooked (no doubt due to the rush and an absence of care). As this was not replaced I was surprised to find this was charged on the bill (demonstrating rather more care over finances than customer satisfaction). This is a popular restaurant in need of some competition in the area to seriously sharpen it's focus. Any Asian restaurateurs looking to make a killing consider this spot. Very disappointing!
Everybody goes to in-restaurants because everybody else goes there. I don't think a lot of people go there just for the food. Not that it's bad, just very mediocre and at luxury prices. The food is really good when they organize privat events,The menu is the same since years and the dishes are not really "asiatic" in material, texture or taste. The outdoor seating is quite nice, indoor it can get very crowded and family friendly. The family next table, that is.If you want asian food, go to the Sushi Lounge which despite its name serves very authentic Vietnamese dishes at unbeatable prices. Alas in an gym room environment.
