Saxon Inn - County Durham

Our stay at the pub was excellent. We were greeted by the lovely host, Margaret, who made us feel very welcome. They went above and beyond to ensure our stay was enjoyable, with impeccable and newly decorated rooms. Small details like eye masks and ear plugs were a thoughtful touch. The bed was extremely comfortable. The food was amazing, with a nice personal touch of local dishes. The beautiful little church opposite is worth a visit, as well as checking out number 28 for the key. We will definitely be staying here again.

We are grateful that they accommodated us as last-minute guests. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, especially the steak and ale pie. We look forward to returning in the future.

First, this village is definitely worth a visit for its beautifully preserved Saxon church. After exploring the historic site, be sure to stop by the old pub for some traditional Saxon cuisine. The pub has a modern, bright, and friendly atmosphere, and the staff provides top-notch service. They were extremely accommodating to my father, who has limited mobility. The portions of food were generous, especially the cube steak and freshly cooked fish and chips.

We went for a Sunday dinner and chose a 3-course menu. only what I can describe is “old people eat”. it was honestly terrible and the service was so slow. we left and got a burger of mcdonalds when we were. were really so hungry because we couldn't eat it apart from starting 3 chicken wings. the bark tasted like pastries, the maic was 100% smash, yorkshire was inedible and veg was so over boiled. the personal is really friendly what is the only saving gnade at this place. the dessert came in awfully cheap small bowls, the kind they would get in the sick house and the Marmelade-Roly-Poly literally had no marmelade in it. so disappointed it feels like a total waste of money.

Glad we followed up recommendation to go to this small village with Saxon church just outside Bishop Auckland that has a great Inn restaurant. Entering by a relatively small intimate bar we were met by very friendly staff guided to rear restaurant ..two...nice dining areas. Had an excellent lunch of quality food and several very welcoming and efficient staff. Must have a good chef(s) because everything was spot on good value for money.
