Crispy skin potato are pretty good, it hot and kind of crispy. also the eggplants stew thingy with bread, that was AMAZING!! ice chocolate was pretty thick, a little bit too sweet. we were thinking to get some dessert but we was way too full so have to skip that. perhaps next time.
Popular, busy and terrific restaurant. The menu has a Germanic flair, it 's got a great atmosphere and features both indoor and outdoor seating. On arrival, we were warned they were slammed and short staffed so there 'may be a wait ', but the service was wonderful and the staff lovely.
Ornate chandelier hanging from a steel beam warehouse inside seating resembles a saloon car on the Orient Express, carnival style striped awnings the usual Cafe seating outside might sound like an almighty clash but it does add to the charm of this Austrian Cafe in Castlemaine. Recommend the Debreziner. I would give hot choc a miss it was ordinary. You get a rousing welcome by usherer outside staff are great dressed the part.
Why get german food when I can just go to coles??? This is what ran through my head, until the Austrian signage showed and then i thought, but why not coles? The standard here for their presentation is above average, with unashamedly simple dishes. Wurst, schnitzel and goulash. Your typical germanic offerings. Sauerkraut and pickles, green leaves, all of it delicious. Each dish is prepared well, and released in a timely manner. My guests could not pronounce the dish names, which went without a blink from the staff when I ordered in native tongue. On our second sampling there was a splendid terrine in kaiser to share, partnered with two additional courses of das schnitzel, goulash and wurst completed with apple strudel. While superficially similar, the mains share some ingredients, each stood on its own as mastery of the cuisine. As a side note, this place is worth the detour, and if in combination with checking out the other areas around Castlemaine is a full weekend trip.
How wonderful to find a genuine Viennese-style coffee house with all the usual central European delicacies. Full menu including traditional sausages and many others. I was there for breakfast and had the Viennese pancakes which were fantastic. Good coffee too.
