Soban Grill - Carmel-by-the-Sea

The Japanese food we had at this restaurant was possibly the worst I've ever had. Each dish was worse than the one before it, and we couldn't wait to leave once the sushi rolls arrived. The food was stale, bland, and overall a terrible dining experience.

I have dined at Robata in the past, but since the new management took over, the restaurant seems to be thriving. The seating is comfortable, the atmosphere is calm, and our wait staff was excellent. She was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Everyone who came to our table from the restaurant was lovely and eager to assist. The food was exceptional, and I don't say that lightly. My dining companion selected sushi, miso soup, and a house salad, while I chose the teriyaki fillet mignon and chicken, which was outstanding. The meat was tender, cooked to perfection, and served with a delicious ball of barbecue rice. I highly recommend trying the BBQ rice option! The miso soup was the best I've had on the Peninsula. Treat yourself and definitely give this restaurant a try.

This is the best sushi restaurant in Carmel! The food is amazing and the service is exceptional. The chefs are top-notch, and the team, many of whom have been there for over a decade, provide outstanding service. Toshi is the best bartender in Carmel, and servers Beto and Motoko are fantastic - they always take such good care of us with a smile. The restaurant is now under new ownership with Josie and Josiah, who are extremely welcoming. We can't wait to see what they do next.

This is the third time eating at Robata Grill since the new owners took over. Each dinner was amazing. Their menu has quite a surprising range of delicious offerings. I was also impressed to be greeted by the new owners themselves at each visit. Everyone of the staff took the time to make us feel welcome. The quality of food was fantastic and the presentation was equally pleasing. This is definitely one of our favorite dining destinations. We’ll be back!

Fresh food, we enjoyed the Stan roll and karaage, which was absolutely delicious! Really nice salad dressing on the house salad and good shrimp tempura. The bbq rice is as delicious as they say! The service was fast and very friendly.
